Nevada Comets14 stay alive in nationals

Facing elimination at the ASA National Championships, the Nevada Comets 14 and under softball team came through to stay alive in the tournament.

After losing 2-1 to the Kansas City Classics, the Comets came back to beat Milan Aces Gold of Des Moines, Iowa 5-1 on Thursday in Broken Arrow, Okla. The Comets moved to 2-1 in the double elimination tournament and 3-2 overall in the event.

The Comets have allowed one earned run through their first five games. They will play today against Hit and Run of Oklahoma.

The Classics scored two unearned runs in the second and third innings, scoring each run on passed balls. The Comets cut the lead to 2-1 in the sixth when Kayla Dunn scored on Malary Engstrom's sacrifice fly. But the Comets left runners and second and third to end the inning.

Dunn allowed five hits in her complete game effort, striking out four and walking none. Calli Fisher had two hits and Katie Stevens and Andrea Lazzari each added a hit.

Brittany Puzey was the offensive star against Milan, going 3-for-4 with two doubles. Puzuy's three-run double during a four-run fourth gave the Comets a 5-1 lead. Stevens' RBI single gave the Comets a 2-1 lead in the inning.

Puzey started on the mound, but after giving up an unearned run on an error, walk and hit, she gave way to Stevie Smith, who allowed three hits over seven innings.

Stevens, Jackie Trombley and Lazzari were both 2-for-3, Smith doubled and Dunn and Kaycee Wilcks each added a hit.
