Maybe Dave Lundquist's stay in the Major Leagues will be permanent this time.

For the second time in a week, the Carson High graduate has been called up to the San Diego Padres. Lundquist was pitching for the Padres' Triple A affiliate, the Portland Beavers.

The Padres purchased Lundquist's contract on Saturday. To make room for Lundquist, the Padres designated outfielder Emil Brown for assignment. The Padres instructed Beaver manager Rick Sweet not to use Lundquist on Friday because they planned to call him up.

On Monday, the Padres called up Lundquist, but never activated him. By Tuesday night, he was back in the Beavers' clubhouse.

Lundquist, who became the Beavers' closer, was 4-7 with a 3.11 earned run average in 50 games this season for Portland. He had seven saves while allowing 59 hits and striking out 67 through 63 2/3 innings.

Lundquist's previous action in the Major Leagues came in 1999 when he pitched in 17 games for the Chicago White Sox. Lundquist, 28, has come back from two shoulder surgeries to continue his career.
