Pending approval from city supervisors, Seventh Street between Carson and Curry streets will become part of an extended parking lot to the south of a remodeled Ormsby House.

Carson City's planning commissioners approved the request from Ormsby House owners to abandon that portion of street as part of a plan to improve the casino and reduce traffic problems in that section of town.

To the south, Carson Station received approval for its plans to build a parking garage across Curry Street from the existing casino. That plan also has to be approved by city supervisors.

The parking garage plan required a compromise whereby the city agreed to abandon 8 feet of right-of-way on Eighth Street, and three feet on Curry.

Palmer and Lauder Engineering, a contractor on the project, had requested 10 feet of abandonment on each side, but city staff objected, and formulated the compromise.

Construction of the four-story parking garage was also preliminary approved. It will encroach on a portion of West Ninth Street which was approved for abandonment last month. Metcalf Builders is handling the project.
