A Carson City woman who served prison time for a drunken-driving death was given six months behind bars Monday after she showed up at jail with alcohol on her breath one day into her sentence for another drunken-driving charge.
Shelley Roinestad, 39, was sentenced to six months in jail, a fine of $1,105 and a one-year suspension of her driver's license by Justice of the Peace Robey Willis.
She was picked up 5:50 a.m. Nov. 11 for drunken driving and driving without a license.
Roinestad appeared before Willis last week to plead guilty to the new charges and was given the opportunity to go through a treatment program in lieu of the jail time and fine. As part of her probation, she was also to abstain from alcohol for one year.
On Friday, Roinestad reported to the Carson City Jail at 7 a.m. to serve a mandatory 11 days in custody when deputies said they smelled alcohol on her.
"I asked Roinestad if she had been drinking. She said, 'No,'" the report states.
Officers administered a breathalyzer test. The result was .11 blood-alcohol content, and she was charged with contempt of court.
In June of this year, Roinestad was released from prison after serving 10 years on a 20-year-sentence for the drunken driving death of Michelle Jacoboni.
Jacoboni, 22, died moments after the head-on collision April 8, 1990, on Highway 50 East in Dayton.
Because the offense was more than seven years ago, Roinestad was charged Nov. 11 with first-offense drunken driving.
Prompted by the tragedy, Jacoboni's mother, Judy, organized Nevada's only chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
