A 17-year-old boy who reportedly made an attempt to break out of juvenile detention by fighting a guard will face felony charges as an adult, a juvenile master determined.

Will Michael McNurney is being charged with felony attempted escape, battery with substantial bodily harm and battery by a prisoner related to an Aug. 13 incident at the Carson City Juvenile Detention Center. Chief Probation Officer Sheila Banister has said McNurney attacked a probation officer early in the morning, but was overtaken by detention-center staff.

The officer, who was treated and released from Carson-Tahoe Hospital, reportedly received minor injuries. Since the incident, McNurney has been in custody at the Carson City Jail where he is being held in lieu of $20,000 bail.

McNurney is from Silver Springs. He is set for a preliminary hearing on the adult charges Oct. 12 at 2:30 p.m. in justice court. Banister said a prosecutor made a motion to have the case tried in adult courts.
