CARSON CITY - Nevada state university regents have authorized a study of police departments at the various campuses to see if officers meet standards and have adequate training.
The study was prompted by a UNLV Police drug raid at a dormitory. An investigation found the officers didn't follow department policies and UNLV policies were flawed.
Chancellor Jane Nichols said the study should look at the current practices, police forces' size, funding and effectiveness.
The study, to be completed by February, could be used to oppose a proposal that all police agencies be consolidated under a state department, she said.
''The campuses feel this is not in the best interest of the students and security,'' Nichols said. ''The police need to report to the presidents.''
