Carson Country's Ed Flagg and Jim Butler won the first world titles at the AAU World Powerlifting Championships held over the weekend in Las Vegas.
Both competed in the law enforcement and military division. Flagg competed at 275 pounds while Butler competed at 242 pounds.
Flagg was able to lift 540 pounds in the squat, 335 pounds in the bench press and 507 pounds in the dead lift. Butler lifted 502 in the squat, 364 in the bench press and 502 in the dead lift.
"We didn't hit what we wanted to hit on our projections as far as our lifts," Flagg said.
Flagg said he wanted to lift 606 in the squat, 358 in the bench press and 570 in the dead lift.
You have to keep getting up for the next lift and it becomes long in between," said Butler about the competition, which lasted from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Flagg, a Douglas High graduate who lives in Gardnerville, was still able to reach his personal best in competition in the bench press. Flagg is still lifting despite two shoulder surgeries.
His personal best is 603 3/4 in the squat and 540 in the dead lift. Butler, who lives in Gardnerville has personal bests of 535 in the squat, 370 in the bench press and 518 in the dead lift.
The two training partners have also won state, regional and national titles.
