A Galena High School student was arrested Thursday afternoon for possession of an explosive device at school.
The 17-year-old male was one of several seen scattering by a Washoe County sheriff's deputy at the Mount Rose Pits near the Mount Rose Highway.
According to Washoe County Sheriff's Deputy Michelle Youngs when the deputy investigated he found a device about the size of a shoe box.
The device was described by bomb squad members as small, with some question as to whether it would work.
"It was a small crude explosive device that may or may not have worked," she said. The device was detonated by bomb squad members.
The teen was arrested for possession of an explosive device and possession of an explosive device on school property.
Youngs said the second charge was added because the teen allegedly had the device in his car at Galena High School before going to the pit to blow it up.
The teen was arrested about 1 p.m.
