Gov. Kenny Guinn has named ringside physician Edwin Flip Homansky to the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

He replaces Lorenzo Fertitta who resigned to devote more time to his duties as president of Station Casinos in Las Vegas.

"For almost two decades, Flip Homansky has worked hard at protecting not only the fighters in the ring but the integrity of the sport in Nevada," said Guinn. "His expertise, his passion for the sport of boxing and his dedication will serve the athletic commission well."

Homansky is 50 and currently chief of staff for Valley Hospital in Las Vegas. He has been ringside physician for more than 100 championship fights over the years.

He said since he has worked with commission members for years, he anticipates a smooth transition.

The athletic commission regulates professional and amateur boxing events in Nevada.
