Letter: Charge at state parks should be reduced

To Wayne Perock, Nevada State Parks and Recreation

I am writing you because of my concerns about the new abusive charges for day use of your state parks.

I am 59 years old and next April I will be 60. I was planning on using your facilities on a regular basis next year until I found that you have raised the Senior Citizens Pass age to 65. Why? Additionally, I discovered that you have raised the walk-in charge to $2 and have no provisions for people on disability.

I bring up the people with disabilities because I am presently retired because of my disabilities. I am collecting Social Security and am on a fixed income. The yearly fees and indeed the daily use fees are beyond my present budget. Carson City Recreation considers you a senior citizen at 55. Why is the state different?

Because I had a heart attack and am a diabetic, I must exercise regularly. The Spooner Lake walking path has been one of my regular places to walk, but this year because of the new fee structure, I am walking the streets of Carson City.

Just what do all our taxes in Nevada pay for? I would hope for the citizens to enjoy its parks and recreation facilities without paying twice for the privilege.

Enclosed please find a clipping out of the Nevada Appeal. Note that California has reduced its state park fees because nobody was using the facilities. Of course if you are reserving the parks for the rich and famous, maybe you should raise the fees even higher.
