On Oct. 20, during half-time at our son's Pop Warner football game in Carson City, my husband and I observed conduct which we found very disturbing. As we were walking by the opposing team at one end of the field during half-time, one of the team's coaches was engaged in profane verbal abuse directed at one of his players.
The tirade laced with swear words at the poor kid and his teammates continued as we got to our side of the field. Some of the other parents on our side were questioning what was going on. In fact, we had taken notice of yelling by more than one coach before the game had started.
I believe it's OK in sports for my son to be yelled at when he needs it, but there is a way to go about getting a point across. I have no complaints about the way our son's coaches behave. This Carson coach was out of control; way out of line.
My questions are: Hello? Who are you parents whom allow your children to be ridiculed and abused in such a manner, for the sake of a football game? How fun can that be? These kids are only in the range of eight to 11. Furthermore, what are our children learning from this? If this had been my son, I would not have tolerated such despicable and immature behavior. Either the coach would go or I'd pull my son off the team. Having raised five boys involved in sports, this is the worst conduct we've seen directed at such a young group.
There was also an incident where one of our monitors was cussed out by a Carson coach. I won't go into that; there isn't enough space.
