An admitted child molester - and former California cop - received a 10 year to life sentence Monday for sexual misconduct with a 13-year-old girl.
David A Sediq, 32, was arrested in January following an interrogation by a Carson City Sheriff's detective. The detective had been told by a school counselor of the abuse allegations. The girl reportedly told investigators that the molestation had been going on since she was 10 years old.
Sediq was employed as a salesman in Carson City at the time of his arrest.
Prosecutor Matt Jensen said admission to the rape charge would normally warrant a recommendation of 10 years imprisonment with a cap of 25 years. Because the abuse went on for several years and Sediq showed little remorse, he said, the option of life behind bars should be applied.
"I've seen Mr. Sediq in court and he demonstrates insolence," he said. "He regrets where he is, not what he did."
Judge Michael Griffin justified the stiff sentence, saying that the relationship consisted of "continual sexual contact with a girl in the security of her own home."
During the sentencing, Sediq addressed family members of the victim, apologizing for the breach of trust.
Sediq was a California police officer from 1991 to 1995. He is also college educated with a military background.
Public Defender Chet Kafchinski, who represented Sediq, argued that Sediq's history of public service should be considered when judging whether he could potentially spend the rest of his life behind bars.
"He has from day one admitted his culpability," he said. Kafchinksi recommended a sentence of 10 to 25 years.
