On Aug. 27, the third-annual Underwater Treasure Hunt will take place at Sand Harbor State Park, Lake Tahoe.
The High Desert Divers Dive Club and Strictly Scuba Dive & Snorkel Center in Carson City and Sierra Diving Center in Reno sponsor the event. All proceeds will benefit the Divers Alert Network, a nonprofit organization dedicated to research and education on safety in recreational scuba diving. Last year's event resulted in a donation of more than $1,100.
Participation is open to free divers as well as certified scuba divers. Proof of certification will be required for scuba divers and equipment will be inspected at time of check in.
Participants can preregister for $15 prior to Aug. 25 or pay $20 on the day of the dive. The registration fee does not include the $6 park entrance fee. Divers will hunt for numbered golf balls hidden underwater which can be redeemed for prizes donated by dive equipment manufacturers and local merchants.
A barbecue lunch is included in the registration fee. Event t-shirts will be available for sale.
