Coming off back-to-back heart breakers this week, the Yerington High School boys soccer team got back on track with an 8-2 Northern 3A victory against Lyon County rival Fernley on Saturday.

Jesus Juarez scored four goals to lead the assault as the Lions improved their conference record to 7-8 and kept their hopes for a top-four finish alive.

Yerington's chances were hindered with a 4-3 loss to North Tahoe earlier in the week and then a 4-3 loss against Bishop Manogue Friday in Reno. Manogue scored goals in the 68th and 71st minutes to pull out its win on Friday.

On Saturday, Travis Lemos scored off an assist from Robert Alderran in the second minute to give Yerington a 1-0 lead. The Lions scored again one minute later when Juarez scored his first goal, with an assist from Tony Gutierrez. It was 3-0 after Gutierrez scored an unassisted goal in the 11th minute.

With his four goals, Juarez now has 23 on the season.

The Lions host Lowry Wednesday in an important conference match. Eight teams advance to the Northern 3A playoffs and the top four earn the home field advantage for the first round.

Galena 2, McQueen 1

Amy Jackson had a hand in two quick goals as the Grizzlies took a 2-0 lead in the opening six minutes and then held on to solidify their hold on first-place in the High Desert League.

Jackson scored an unassisted goal in the third minute and then she assisted Bianca Sciotto on a goal in the sixth minute for Galena, now 11-2-1 in league play.

That was ample support for a Galena defense that had a shutout going until McQueen scored in the 76th minute. Galena goalkeeper Jayleen Chen finished with three saves.
