A second-half comeback wasn't enough for the Yerington High School boys soccer team on Friday afternoon as the Lions dropped a 3-2 verdict in their Northern 3A season opener at Spring Creek.
The Spring Creek Spartans scored three times before halftime to take a lead they never relinquished. Yerington did make things interesting in the second half on goals by Robert Albarran and Jesus Juarez. The goal by Juarez, assisted by Tony Gutierrez, came with 10 minutes left but the Lions were unable to come up with the equalizer.
Yerington's Dillon Mudloff, a 6-foot-2 junior goalkeeper, was credited with 17 saves, aided by the solid play of sweeper Brian Smith.
Yerington returns to action at home on Sept. 6 with another 3A contest against Dayton.
