RENO, Nev. - The air conditioners and pools were in use earlier than usual Thursday in Las Vegas as the city tied its modern record for the month of April.

The high of 99 degrees tied April 24, 1946 and April 30, 1981 for records dating back to 1937 - first at Nellis Air Force Base and more recently at McCarran International Airport.

Before that, temperatures were recorded in downtown Las Vegas by a weather observer who reported 102 on April 19, 1914.

State Climatologist John James said on Friday that the earliest 100-degree reading at the Las Vegas airport was 102 on May 1, 1947.

Forecasters call for the Vegas readings to return to the more seasonal 80s over the weekend, with no chance of a high anywhere near the century mark by May 1, which is Monday.
