Seventeen was the magic number for the Carson Capitols amateur baseball club on Tuesday. The Capitols scored 17 runs in both games to sweep their doubleheader from Rocklin, Calif., winning 17-0 and 17-7.
Joe Mercer slammed two home runs and drove in seven runs to lead the offensive barrage that helped the Capitols improve their summer season record to 10-1.
The Capitols mounted eight-run rallies in the second and seventh innings to win the opener. Joe Jacobitz hit 2-for-4, while Mercer homered with three RBIs and Pete White doubled with two RBIs.
Thrace Ramsey, Tim Priess and Brian Kleidosty combined to pitch four-hit ball in the second game, as the Capitols posted their fourth shutout in six games. Priess pitched the middle three innings to pick up the win. Ramsey, a South Tahoe High School product who played this past spring for Cerro Coso College in Ridgecrest, Calif., started and worked two innings in his debut with the Caps.
Carson scored 10 runs in the seventh inning to break the second game wide open.
John Fender and Jacobitz both went 3-for-4 to lead the Capitols offensively. Jacobitz drove in three runs, while Mercer drove in four and Dan Gubbels homered and drove in two runs.
The Capitols conclude their six-game swing through the Sacramento area today when they play a 10 a.m. doubleheader against El Dorado American Legion at Union Mine High School in El Dorado, Calif.
