After watching one get away earlier in the week, the Carson High School girls basketball team was determined not to experience a repeat on Friday night.
There was none, as Alyson Thurman scored 10 of her game-high 13 points in the third quarter to lead a surge that carried the Senators to a 52-32 triumph at home against Northern 4A Division II rival Douglas.
Carson outscored Douglas 19-5 in the third quarter en route to a win that solidified its hold on second-place in Division II. The Senators improved their record to 5-2 (20-4 overall).
However, there were some anxious moments after Douglas trimmed a 16-4 first-quarter deficit to 22-15 at halftime. Some very anxious moments, considering the Senators had seen an eight-point lead turn into a 49-44 defeat at home against division-leading Reno just three nights before.
"We had a good talk at halftime," said Meghan Gradert, who finished with 10 points. "We wanted to come out and be strong. We wanted to take over the game.
"Reno was a really tough loss; we wanted to make sure we came back with a win," the junior post player added.
Lauren Myers and Andrea Honer scored eight points each to lead Douglas (4-4, 15-7).
