Carson wrestlers lose twice

Taking on the wrestling team from Fallon High School or Galena is a tough enough task on any given day.

But competing against both teams on the same day proved too much for Carson on Wednesday, as the Senators fell to Galena 43-25 and Fallon 42-23 in a conference double-dual meet.

Although Galena and Fallon (along with Reno) are among the favorites to take the Northern 4A Zone Tournament next month, Carson coach Tim McCarthy said the Senators could have made the matches closer.

"Our tough kids didn't wrestle tough, and our young kids showed their inexperience," McCarthy said. "We might be a better tournament team than dual-meet team."

In the marquee match of the day, Carson's Justin Sarnowski was edged out by Fallon's Dan Shaw 5-4 in a contest that went scoreless in the third period. It was a rematch of the '99 zone final, which Sarnowski won.

Branden Lamborn and Justin Shine were double winners for the Senators.

3A Boys Basketball

Fernley 58, North Tahoe 46

Tyler Selden scored 18 points and Ben Chisum added 15 points as the Vaqueros (1-1, 7-4) picked up their first Division I win of the season at home on Wednesday against the Lakers.

North Tahoe fell to 1-3 within the divsion.

The Lakers kept close to Fernley through the first half, but the Vaqueros outscored Tahoe 15-6 in the third to pull away for the win.

Fernley plays at Division I leader Tahoe-Truckee (3-0) on Friday.

3A Division I Girls Basketball

Fernley 67, North Tahoe 29

Jana Prida scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Fernley began division play by crushing the visiting Lakers.

North Tahoe was held to six points in the first half and just 11 field goals on the night. Fernley led 18-2 after the first quarter alone.

"We had a good balance from the beginning, and it was a snowball effect," Fernley coach Dave Burns said.

Freshman Racheal Henderson scored 11 points, while Kera Claar added 10. Kim Dunn paced the offense by finding open players on several fast breaks.

"We simply out-ran them," Burns added.

Fernley (5-7, 1-0 Division I) resumes division play when it travels to face Tahoe-Truckee at 6 p.m. Friday.
