City Hall has extra freeway information

Finding information about the planned Carson City freeway is as easy as heading to Carson City Hall.

The Nevada Department of Transportation recently installed an interactive computer kiosk at City Hall as another avenue to spread freeway information to the public.

With the touch of a finger, the interactive display leads viewers through a faster version of the freeway Web site. It works like a Web site, leading the user to information as he or she points to the information sought .

"We're really proud of the Web site," NDOT spokesman Scott Magruder said. "It's a nice tool but not everyone has access to the Internet. We're trying to make this as simple as possible for someone with no computer experience to get on and go through it."

NDOT paid about $5,000 each for two touch-sensitive kiosks. The second one will probably be placed at the SuperKmart on North Carson Street by the end of February.

Magruder said NDOT was trying to make the information kiosks as accessible to as many people as possible.

City Hall is a logical spot, but transportation officials will monitor use of the kiosks and would consider moving the kiosks to busier locations if necessary. A map is located alongside the kiosk for a quick overview of the freeway's position in Carson City.

Information in the computer kiosk will be updated as the Web site is updated with new information.

"We're just trying to keep everyone informed," Magruder said.
