Construction planned for several new businesses

Two fast food restaurants on Highway 50 East are among several commercial construction projects being planned in Carson City.

Weinerschnitzel will return to Carson City and a Dairy Queen is expected in front of Long's Drugs, according to applications on file at the Carson City Community Development Department.

Tony Psarras of Reno, owner of Reno-Carson Construction, said he would like to start building the Weinerschnitzel restaurant by the end of March and have it open by the end of summer.

Psarras already built a Weinerschnitzel in Reno, between Kietzke Lane and Highway 395 on Mill Street. He said he builds the facilities and franchises the operations out to operators. Psarras said he plans to build several more in the Northern Nevada area.

A Weinerschnitzel that had operated in Carson City was demolished several years ago to make way for the Smith's store. It was at the corner of William and Valley streets. The new restaurant would be on the south side of the 3300 block of Highway 50 East, near Albertson's.

The Dairy Queen would be in front of Long's Drugs, on the north side of the 3200 block of Highway 50 East, according to the application.

The city's process allows a developer to have a proposed project reviewed by representatives of several city departments, from building to fire to streets, for compliance with codes, ordinances and regulations. The developer then has the opportunity to make any required changes to the plans before seeking a building permit, special use permit or other required approval.

Applications scheduled for reviews on Tuesday are an Albertson's store proposed at 3660 North Carson Street, across College Parkway from Kmart, and a new church and school for First Christian Church, proposed for Imus Road, which runs north of Bonanza Drive just east of Highway 395 North.

Kragen Auto Parts, which recently closed its store at 2319 North Carson St., is considering building a store at 3479 South Carson St., where A&J Foreign Car Repair and Western Energetix are now located.

Kragen's parent company, CSK Auto Inc., recently purchased Grand Auto and is in the process of converting Carson's Grand Auto to a Kragen, as well.

A new building for Custom Office Supply & Furniture Inc. may be built at 2814 North Carson St., according to a Major Project Review application. The 13,410-square-foot building would be south of the Bank of the West branch at Carson Street and Nye Lane.

Custom Office Supply is currently at 1851 North Carson St.

And additional retail commercial space is being planned at the south end of the Kmart store. The site plan in the application shows four building pads.

One 5,000-square-foot pad would be close to Carson Street, south of the existing McDonald's Restaurant. A 16,640-square-foot pad would be adjacent to the south end of Kmart. The remaining two pads, encompassing 39,560 and 18,800 square feet, would be south of the entrance lane running along the south end of the existing Kmart parking lot.

No additional entrance to the shopping center was shown on the site plan submitted with the application.
