DAYTON - Dayton's crowded Justice Court will get additional storage and office space, according to a Lyon County plan.
County Manage Stephen Snyder said funding for improving Lyon County's four justice courts would be divided equally between the County's Administrative Assessment Fund and local justice court Administrative Assessment funds.
"We will go ahead and put together the Fernley plans. Once we get an estimate, we will come back for board approval," Snyder said. "We will also start developing concept plans for Dayton and Smith Valley and as funds become available we will move forward with those projects."
Dayton Justice of the Peace Ed Johnson said tentative plans for the Dayton court include adding on to the north side of the historic Bluestone Building, including the excavation of a basement. The project would eliminate a portion of the current parking area.
"We would use the basement for storage and upper level for additional office space. The courtroom would remain the same," Johnson explained. "We would like to keep the appearance of the addition as historical as possible."
In looking for additional parking space, Johnson said the acquisition of additional property would be pursued, including the two vacant parcels to the north of the current parking lot owned by the Comstock Historic District.
No specific time frame for the Dayton project has been set.
