Fernley girl earns all-state honor

SPARKS - Fernley High School's Kera Claar placed seventh in the girls' 3A race to lead a contingent of Lyon County runners at the NIAA/U.S. Bank State Cross Country Championships on Saturday morning.


Claar, who qualified for state as an individual, finished the 5,000-meter race in a time of 22 minutes 27 seconds. North Tahoe sophomore Heather Sandeman won in 20:22.


Dayton's Grace Barceinas and Michelle Hulme also finished 22nd and 24th, respectively.


In the boys' race, Brian Reeder of Fernley ran 19:22 to finish 19th. Dayton's Ron Laird and Nick Pribilia finished 28th and 30th, respectively, to help the Dust Devils finish sixth as a team with 158 points.


Tony Fleming of Spring Creek ran 17:00 to win the individual gold and Boulder City scored 32 points to end North Tahoe's streak of eight straight team titles.


Virginia City had two entrants in the state 2A race: Kenny Rondeau, a senior, was 16th in 19:34 and sophomore Jack Bosley was 20th in 19:53.
