Fire council meets Tuesday

Marie Wolf, a Carson City homeowner, is just one person who is trying to reduce property loss and lives from Nevada wildfires.

Wolf has brought together residents in her west Carson neighborhood to plan and put into use some steps to better protect their homes from fire.

Wolf has also been active in the newly formed Nevada Fire Safe Council which meets Tuesday in the Nevada Division of Forestry offices, 885 E. Lake Blvd., Washoe Valley.

Wolf attended the first council meeting and expressed concerns. Since then, she has agreed to serve on the state council's board of directors, and will update fellow members on her group's plans at next week's state council meeting.

Wolf said she hopes the neighborhood will serve as an example to communities across the state. She said it has to be a grassroots community based level to work well.

The council has taken its plans to the Nevada Association of Counties meeting recently held in Las Vegas, and the American Planning Association meeting in South Lake Tahoe this past weekend. The council is helping to develop a statewide policy for fire prevention and rehabilitation. Creation of the state policy should also help the state seek out federal funding.

The 25-plus members who attended last month's meeting followed through with goals, forming a committee to gather needed material to apply for nonprofit status. The council forms a "unified coalition that will work on solutions to reduce the loss of lives and property from the threat of wildland fires in Nevada's communities."

The meeting is open to the public. For information, call 784-4848.
