Four first-places in ski meet

The Carson High alpine team had twice as many first-place finishers as normal on Wednesday, as the Senators recorded a rare double first-place tie in both the boys and girls competition at Mt. Rose in giant slalom competition against Sparks High.

In the girls race, Senator skiers Tomi-Jo Johnson and Kristin Field tied for first place with the time of 32.4 seconds; in the boys race, Aaron Reinhardt and David Crowell tied for the lead with a run of 31.2.

Both the Carson boys and girls defeated Sparks in the competition. The Carson girls also beat Manogue to improve their record to 5-0 this season, while the boys lost to the Miners, 86-73, to fall to 3-2 this season.

Carson coach Jack Reinhardt said that although ties in alpine skiing are rare, they're not unheard of.

"It's not common for a team to have both its boys and girls tie for first, but it really helps the team in scoring, with two skiers getting 20 points," Reinhardt said. "The girls team is skiing really well and has improved its level of skiing since the season began."

Reinhardt said the boys loss to Manogue was somewhat surprising.

"Manogue was tougher than I thought, they had three strong giant slalom skiers," Reinhardt said. "Nick Reinhardt has his work cut out for him if he's going to defend his state giant slalom title.

In addition to the first-place finishers, Carson's additional top female skiers against Sparks were: Sara Field (3rd, 33.0), Jackie Nourse (4th, 33.3), Catarina Farrow (5th, 35.0) and Haley Zook and Kristen Jenkins, tied for sixth in 35.1.

The Senators top boy skiers against the Railroaders included: Jason Strull and Eric Marantette (tied for third, 32.7), Vance Harper (5th, 32.8), Derek Clemmensen (6th, 33.6), and Hunter Atherton (7th, 33.8).
