RENO - The Nevada Historical Society is moving the Phillip I. Earl lecture series to the National Automobile Museum beginning with its Feb. 8 lecture on Zion in Gomorrah: The Mormons of Nevada.
The address is 10 Lake St. South, Reno, and the lecture begins at 7 p.m. and is free. Call 688-1190, ext. 0.
Earl will discuss the origins of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, their persecution in Missouri and Illinois, the journey west, 1846-47 and their part in the settlement of the American West.
Brigham Young's concept of the Outer Cordon Settlement will also be discussed as will his efforts to achieve a measure of political and economic independence for his people in both Utah and Nevada.
The present day significance of the LDS church and the Mormon people in Las Vegas and their relationship to the casino and tourism industry will also be subjected to analysis.
