Former prosecutor Will Mattly filed Monday for the newly created district court judgeship in Churchill and Lyon counties.

Mattly, 66, was elected three times as a district attorney in Butte County, Calif., appointed district attorney in Battle Mountain and served 10 years as a deputy U.S. attorney in Nevada.

He is seeking the third judgeship in the Third District, which was created by the 1997 Legislature for Churchill and Lyon counties.

Mattly described himself as a believer in protecting people's rights but someone who believes that the guilty should pay the penalty for their crimes.
