Nevada-bound senior Ashlee Orndorff scored 19 points for Mineral County High School, but the unbeaten 3A Division II-leading Serpents still had enough firepower to secure a 51-33 win at Dayton on Friday night.
"I was pleased with our defense and rebounding," said Dayton coach Kathy Jones, noting that Mineral County has been putting up high point totals all through the Division II season. "I think we played good basketball tonight."
Dayton (14-11, 6-3 Division II) trailed only 11-6 after the first quarter and would have been down 23-14 at the half, but Mineral County's Delicia Jernigan hit a -court buzzer-beater in the face of defensive pressure to increase the Serpents' total by three.
Jennifer Dillie led the Dust Devils with 21 points. LaTasha Thompson had 12 points, while Jeanette Macall had eight points to go with five assists and 10 rebounds.
"Jeanette had a good overall game for us tonight," Jones said.
Jernigan was the only other Mineral County player in double figures with 12. Sidney Orndorff, Ashlee's freshman sister, had four.
The Serpents improved their division-leading record to 8-0 with the victory.
Dayton hosts Incline next at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
