YERINGTON - County officials have agreed to partially fund a mural displaying representations of Lyon County's heritage.
Lyon County commissioners last week agreed with the concept of a wall painting on the west side of the existing Lyon County Records Building.
The board allocated $5,000 to the project and directed Lyon County Economic Development Director John Sanderson to approach the Room Tax Board for the remainder of the funding.
The county's portion will come from the special projects fund.
According to Sanderson, the mural would be a historical representation of the development and economy that have shaped the heritage of Lyon County.
Agriculture, Commerce and mining would be depicted, including individual cameos of those who have had an impact in the growth and development of the county. The county would select the individuals.
Costs for the 75-foot-long, 14-foot-high mural are estimated at $9,000. Starry Night Art Ranch artists George LeMaitre and Pat Fietta will do the work. The artists recently designed the new county logo.
Proposed cameos for the mural include: John C. Fremont, Mark Twain, Joseph R. Walker, Kit Carson, Hock Mason, Gen. Nathaniel Lyon, Henry Marvin Yerington, Gen. Sylvester Churchill, Joe Parr, Joe Dini, Wovoka, and Dr. Mary Fulstone.
Sanderson, County Manager Stephen Snyder and one commissioner will form a committee to work on establishing additional names.
