GARDNERVILLE - The Nevada Yankees came close on Sunday but fell short in their bid to salvage a win from their weekend Stan Musial baseball series against the San Mateo Bulldogs.
San Mateo held on to sweep a doubleheader at Lampe Park, winning the opener 12-11 followed by an 8-5 triumph in game two. The Bulldogs won both ends of a twin-bill on Saturday night, 13-9 and 9-4.
"We had our chances, we just couldn't get the clutch hits when we needed them," said Yankees manager Dennis Young, whose club fell to 2-6 overall for the summer and 0-4 in Stan Musial league play. "We had the tying run in scoring position in the first game and couldn't him in."
Down 9-1 after two innings in the opener, the Yankees rallied back and pulled to within one run in the bottom of the seventh when Shane Cauley doubled and scored on Tyler Robinson's single. Robinson got to second on Chris Cook's sacrifice, but was left stranded by a game-ending strikeout.
Joel Kruger hit 3-for-5, including a two-run double in the sixth inning, and Robinson went 3-for-5 with two RBIs for the Yankees. Bryan Estes and Shane Cauley also had two hits each.
Trevor Crawford hit 2-for-3 and Cauley 2-for-2 with one RBI in the second game.
Saturday night, Estes slammed a three-run homer in the opener while Matt James and Matt Staub collected two hits each in game two.
The Yankees begin a four-day, five-game road trip tonight in Bend, Ore.
