Nugget race goes down to the wire

It took all 8,000 meters to decide this year's Nugget Nevada Day Classic race.

In the end, Reno's Scott Young, 33, held off Ryan Ress, 25, also from Reno, to win the nearly 5-mile run by one second in a course record time of 26:57. Ress' time of 26:58 was also well below the old course record set last year by Miguel Tibaduiza.

The women's winner was Jamie Kaminski, 30, of South Lake Tahoe, who finished with the time of 31:27. She was 56 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Deb Devine of Incline Village.

The first finisher from Carson City was Dennis Brinson, 42, in 28:21. He was the men's masters winner. Jackie Taylor, 43, was the women's masters winner in 33:19.

The first woman from Carson City was Annie Brinson, a 12-year-old middle school student who ran 34:10.

Frank Boucher, 43, was the overall winner of the accompanying two-mile race in 11:44. Second place went to Ernesto Ugalde, 35, in 12:09.

The first female in the 2-mile race was Julie Hinton, 16, in 13:36. Virginia Nicholson, 59, was the first masters runner in 16:01.

Tabor Griswold was the top runner in the Clydesdale (200 pound plus) division for the two mile in 20:55.

The first walker to complete the 2-mile course was Michael Warren, who clocked a 22:19. Starr Friedenthal, 53, was the first female walker across the line in 23:15.

A total of nearly 300 runners and walkers competed in the annual runs and walk, which was a benefit for the Special Olympics.
