VIRGINIA CITY - Richard "Pop" Haynes, 88, of Virginia City died Tuesday in St. Mary's Hospital in Reno.
Mr. Haynes was born Aug. 28, 1911, in Kansas City, Kan., to Harry and Carrie Barrett Haynes. He graduated from the University of Kansas, where he played baseball, football and basketball and competed in track.
A retired building contractor, Mr. Haynes had moved to Virginia City 16 months ago after living in Fullerton, Calif., since 1932.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War Two and was a past member of the Masons, the Shriners and the Lions Club in Los Angeles, Calif., and the Elks Club in Fullerton. He was a protestant.
Mr. Haynes was married for 38 years to Oletha Hawkins Haynes, who preceded him in death in 1975. He was married for 21 years to Hope Hodlins, who preceded him in death in 1997.
He is survived by brother Jim Haynes of Torrance, Calif., and son and daughter-in-law Charles and Peggy Haynes of Virginia City.
a memorial service will be held Monday at 4 p.m. at the Presbyterian church in Virginia City. Walton's Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.
