A memorial service for Richard "Dick" Douglas Maggach, 72, will be at 1 p.m. March 11, at the Carson Valley United Methodist Church with Pastor Pete Nelson officiating.
Mr. Maggach died March 1. He was born Feb. 22, 1928, in a farmhouse in Castro Valley, Calif., to Alex and Eva Maggach.
He was raised in Castro Valley and attended school there. He also attended Hayward High School and Modesto Junior College. He joined the Maritime Commission and trained six weeks under the Coast Guard enabling him to serve as an Able Bodied Seaman in the Merchant Marine toward the end of World War II.
He married Shirley Scott Jan. 10, 1948.
Mr. Maggach worked for a Caterpillar dealer in San Leandro, Calif. until 1958 when he founded Valley Excavating. He was a licensed general engineering contractor in California and Nevada, doing extensive work with Pacific Gas and Electric and the Bay Area Rapid Transit. In 1971, he semi-retired and moved to Gardnerville where he continued his business doing minor jobs in Douglas County until he retired in 1987.
He was a past president of the Pleasanton Lions Club in 1968. He joined the Livermore Elks Club and was a charter member of the Minden/Douglas Elks Lodge No. 2670. He was past president of the Douglas County Contractors Association and past treasurer and an active member of the Gardnerville Kiwanis Club for 16 years.
He was preceded in death by his mother in 1953 and father in 1957.
Among his survivors are his wife, Shirley of Gardnerville; daughters and sons-in-law, Michael and Susan Arnett of Midwest City, Okla. and Terry and Sandra O'Connor of Pleasanton; brother, Scotty of Pleasanton; sister, Evelyn of Danville, Calif.; sister and brother-in-law Bud and Ruth Brillisour of Placerville, Calif.; grandsons, Clint and Jerry Gilchrist of Midwest City, Rod and Clayton O'Connor of Pleasanton and granddaughter, Monica O'Connor of Pleasanton and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Carson Valley Methodist Church.
