Yerington High School had plenty of chances down the stretch, but it couldn't convert any of its opportunities in a 46-40 loss at Rite of Passage on Thursday night.
"In the last minute of the game, we had seven 3-point attempts, but none went in," said Lions coach Daron Wildermuth following the loss which dropped Yerington's early season record to 1-3. "They tried to give it to us."
ROP (3-3) did a good job of defending Yerington's Mike Keats, who was held to five points. He had been averaging 12 points per game.
Matt Farler had 20 points for the Lions in the loss.
Interestingly enough, there were only six free throws attempted in the game.
Wrestling
Galena 44, Douglas 30
The Grizzlies gave the Tigers their first dual meet loss of the year Wednesday in Reno.
Galena got off to a quick start by registering falls in the first three weight divisions. Those pins were recorded by Mike Crooks (103 pounds), Justin Ellmaker (112) and Kyle Knox (119).
Douglas led in the meet through 171 pounds following Nathan Bennett's pin of T.C. Ghisletta. But Galena came back to score the match's final points when Jesse Jones defeated John Hillenbrand, Dan Knox pinned Matt Wicks and Pat Nohr won the heavyweight division by forfeit.
Douglas coach Brian Dempsey said five of the Tigers varsity wrestlers didn't participate in the dual meet, forcing Douglas to rely on several junior varsity wrestlers.
