SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - Ryan Costella led 1-2 sweeps in both the 100-yard butterfly and 100 breaststroke to help propel the Carson High School boys swimming and diving team to a 148-133 Northern 4A dual swimming and diving meet victory against South Tahoe on Friday afternoon.

Costella won the butterfly in a time of 57.64 seconds and came back to take the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.58 to emerge as Carson's only double winner during the meet at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Complex pool. Ryan Theilemann was second in the butterfly (58.75) and Ben MacCarty was second in the breaststroke (1:10.90) for Carson.

South Tahoe wound up with a four-point advantage in the swimming events, but Carson scored a 1-2-3 sweep of the diving competition held in Reno to pull out the team victory. The official diving results were unavailable.

Evan Fischer (23.34) and Joey Hurzel (25.71) also finished first and second in the 50 freestyle for the Senators. Kyle McAfee and Hurzel also went 1-2 in the 100 backstroke with respective times of 1:08.66 and 1:09.56.

Carson also emerged a winner on the girls side by a 177-120 score.

Kate Hardt, Lauren Costella and Jessie Hong swept the top three places in the 50 freestyle to aid Carson's cause. Hardt won the race with a 26.79 clocking.

Hong, Tara Theilemann and Hardt also went 1-2-3 in the 100 backstroke. Hong won the race 1:02.96.

Northern 4A Softball

Reed 4, Douglas 2

The Tigers had plenty of hits against the Raiders. The only problem was, they all came at the wrong time despite outhitting Reed 11-9.

"We had players hit and get on base, but we couldn't put together any sustained offense," said Douglas Ken Carr. "It was a good, hard-fought game. The only difference was that Reed got some key hits and we didn't get the key hits."

Douglas trailed 3-0 until the bottom of the third, when Jeannette Holt singled home two runners to cut the Raider lead to 3-2. But those would be the Tigers' only runs of the day, as Reed handed the Tigers their first loss of the season. Douglas' record is now 3-1.

Jodi Gonzales, who pitched the Tigers to their win over South Tahoe on Tuesday, pitched well over the first four innings of Friday's game and struck out three batters. Tarrah Kizer pitched the final three innings for Douglas and allowed only one hit while striking out one.

Lindsey Rollins and Michelle Roza were 2-for-4 at the plate for Douglas.

The Tigers resume play on Thursday against Fallon.

Dayton golf

YERINGTON - Dayton High's Jimmy Kepler earned a share of first-place for the second week in a row and helped the Dust Devils finish third as a team during a 3A Division II golf match on Friday afternoon.

Dayton carded a 421 total, behind only Bishop Manogue (394) and Whittell (415) in the seven-team match played at the Mason Valley Country Club. The 421 was only four strokes off the school record 417 the Dust Devils logged last week.

"We had that 417 on a par 68 course (Walker Lake Country Club in Hawthorne) and this was a 421 on a par 72, so we had a good day," Dust Devils coach Shannon Wines said.

Kepler shot 3-over par 75 to finish even for first place individually, but the junior lost the scorecard tiebreaker to Bishop Manogue's Matt Conlin. Kepler finished in the same position last week, only he won the tie-breaker.

Matt Watty shot 82, Cody Oden 83, Jory Eley 89 and Michael Janas 91 to round out Dayton's scoring.

The next Division II match will be played next Friday at 11 a.m. in Hawthorne.
