DAYTON - Spurred on by a stellar defensive performance and new-look offense, the Dayton High School girls basketball team rode to a 46-27 victory at home against Bishop Manogue on Wednesday.
The Dust Devils limited Manogue to 13 points through three quarters - a mere one point in the second quarter alone - to take a commanding lead, and then they coasted to a win that improved their 3A Division II record to 4-2 (10-10 overall).
It was defense by design, according to coach Kathy Jones.
"We've been concentrating on defense ever since Yerington," Jones said, referring to Dayton's 55-51 loss at home to rival Yerington last Friday. "I didn't feel we played good team defense against Yerington. I told them our offense would pick up if they played good defense."
The Dust Devils led this one 15-6 after the first quarter and 26-7 at halftime.
As for that new-look offense, the Dust Devils managed to win on a night when high-scoring Jennifer Dillie scored just 11 points. Tasha Thompson led the way with 14. Jeanette Macall, Cayla Reese, Rachel Hurt and Cindy Wanbaugh also combined to contribute 22 points.
"It was a good team effort," Jones said. "Other teams are starting to double down on Dillie, but like I told the kids, that creates open shots for others and we've got to show we do have other people who can score."
3a division ii BOYS
Bishop Manogue 94, Dayton 87
Dayton High School's boys broke out of their scoring slump and nearly knocked off undefeated Bishop Manogue.
Dayton (10-10, 1-5 Division II) outscored the Miners 27-19 in the final quarter, but by then Manogue (18-4, 6-0) had built too large a lead. Still, Dayton coach Ric Garcia was pleased.
"It was good to see some scoring, but even more important, we played with emotion for the first time in a while," he said. "We got away from what we wanted to do defensively, but we learned from this tonight."
Anthony Martinez led the Dust Devils with 29 points, while Adam Sayre had 12 and Josh Goss had 18. Martinez and Goss both had three 3-pointers each.
Dayton travels to Pershing County for a game at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Lovelock.
