Small grass fire difficult to access

Firefighters from three stations responded to a one-acre brushfire Tuesday by way of canoe and paddle.

A flare-up from a smaller fire Sunday was reported at 3:45 p.m. on the South Side of the Carson River near the intersection of Deer Run Road and Brunswick Canyon Road, said Battalion Chief Rich Chrzanowski.

Because the road runs on the north side of the river, firefighters from the Bureau of Land Management, Central Lyon County Fire and Carson City Fire Department had to paddle across in a canoe.

"Once they were on the other side, they used hand pumps and a 'flotopump' to soak the fire," Chrzanowski said.

A "flotopump" resembles a float-tube with a gas generator on top. It floats and pumps water through a hose.

The fire was under control by 4:45 p.m.
