MADERA, Calif. - Carson City product T.J. Duncan shot one-under par 71 to move into a tie for 24th in the first round of the NCAA West Regional Golf Championship on Thursday.
Duncan, a 1996 Carson High School graduate who now plays for the University of Oregon, shot 35 over the back nine on the 6,966-yard Riverbend Golf Club. As a team, Oregon was 10th with a 290 total.
Meanwhile, Nevada senior Ray Otis shot even-par 72 and was tied for 33rd in the field. Otis shot 2-under 34 over the back nine. Otis, an all Big West Conference selection, was the second low individual, two shots behind Utah's Ryan Ellis.
The tournament continues through Saturday, with the top nine teams and three individuals qualifying for the NCAA Championships, which will be held May 31-June 3 at The Lake Course at Grand National Golf Club in Auburn, Ala.
BIG WEST TRACK
MOSCOW, Idaho - Erin Kelly captured gold for the University of Nevada in the heptathlon at the Big West Track and Field Championships on Thursday.
Kelly, a sophomore from Hillsboro, Ore., won two of her seven events to score 5,151 points and become the fourth Nevada athlete in six years to win the conference heptathlon title. She finished 200 points ahead of Long Beach State's Marian Reneau.
Senior Brooke Wilson also placed fourth with 4,790 points to put Nevada into the women's team lead heading into the rest of the Big West meet, which picks up today.
