Unemployment up another tenth in November

Nevada's unemployment rate was up again for November - by a tenth of a percent from the previous month and nine-tenths when compared with last November.

But while the seasonally adjusted rate was 4.5 percent, the raw, unadjusted rate actually dropped two-tenths from last month to 3.9 percent as retailers began hiring Christmas temporary workers.

Carson City's rate rose to 4.4 percent compared with 4.1 for both October and for November 1998. The lowest unemployment rate in the state was reported by the Reno area, where just 2.8 percent of available workers were without jobs.

Nevada's adjusted unemployment rate was higher than the nation as a whole - which was at 4.1 percent for November, but lower than California's - which was 4.8 percent.

Total employment in the state grew 46,600 to 999,800 over the past year and Las Vegas carried the load, generating 42,500 of those jobs.

Carson City, according to Business and Industry statistics, actually dropped nearly 1,000 workers over the past year to 51,850. The Carson management area includes Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties.
