Nine nonprofit organizations are vying for $20,000 in grant funding offered by the Carson City Convention and Visitors' Bureau for out-of-area advertising for local events.

The grant requests amount to $40,000, so the bureau's directors will likely have to disappoint several applicants when they allocate grants on Monday. The board of directors meets at 5:30 p.m. in the Sierra Room at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St.

The bureau sets aside $20,000 each year to help nonprofits launch events in Carson City that will generate tourism.

"The last thing they have money for sometimes is advertising," said Candy Duncan, the bureau's executive director. "That's how we can help them."

Only four of the nine applicants received a bureau grants last year. These grants are designed to get an event off the ground, not sustain them, Duncan said.

The grant applicants are:

- Capital City Humane Society asking for $5,000 for a Nevada Day parade float.

- Carson City Library Foundation asking for $800 for a street banner for Oktoberfest 2000.

- Carson City Rendezvous asking for $2,500 for out-of-area advertising.

- Carson City Urban Indian Consortium asking for $2,389 for Father's Day Pow Wow advertising.

- Carson City Redevelopment Farmers' Market asking for $2,500 for advertising in Northern Nevada and Northern California.

- Children's Museum of Northern Nevada asking for $9,396 for Reno-Tahoe Airport terminal sign rental, design and printing costs.
