Wadsworth boy injured in accidental shooting

WADSWORTH - An 11-year-old Wadsworth boy was shot and critically injured mid-day Sunday when his older cousin was trying to unload a .22-caliber rifle, according to the Washoe County Sheriff's Department.

Trent Jones was flown to Washoe Medical Center by Careflight helicopter. The boy was listed in critical condition Sunday afternoon.

The shooting happened in the 16-year-old cousin's bedroom in a home at 270 Cemetery Road in Wadsworth, just outside Fernley. The rifle discharged while the cousin attempted to unload the weapon and the bullet struck Jones in the head.

Detectives and forensic invesitagors were on the scene Sunday afternoon. The investigation is ongoing.
