Wooster defeats Galena in showdown

RENO - The showdown between the defending zone champions, Wooster High School, and the defending state champions, Galena, went to the Colts 7-1 on Friday in Reno. The win improved Wooster's zone-leading record to 10-0, while the Grizzlies fell to 9-4.

"We made a lot of mistakes and Wooster was able to take advantage of them," said Galena coach Teresa Burrows. "Wooster is a good team who will beat you if you don't play well, and I don't think we played very well today. We weren't very aggressive in today's game."

Wooster pitcher Brianne McGowen limited the Grizzlies to just five hits and one earned run. Galena's run came on a third-inning home run by Teresa Miller.

The Colts scored five runs during the first two innings off Galena starter Jennifer Molinari. Kirsten Drury came on in the fifth inning for Molinari and gave up one run over three innings of work.

Galena will play a doubleheader at Hug today starting at 10 a.m.

Douglas 6, Hug 0

Tiger pitchers Tarrah Kizer and Jodi Gonzales combined to limit the Hawks to two hits as Douglas shut out Hug at home. Douglas is in the thick of the Northern 4A playoff chase with its 9-5 record with a crucial doubleheader at Reno High (10-1) scheduled for today at 10 a.m.

"We have a huge doubleheader and we needed a good, solid effort like the one we had against Hug," said Douglas coach Ken Carr. "We did a good job advancing runners, had some heads up baserunning, and had some key hits today."

Eight Douglas batters recorded hits for the Tigers. Hillary Moreira was 2-for-3 with a double and home run. The homer was Moreira's third of the season.

Other Tiger batters with multiple hits were Allie Walling and Cheryl Nicoll.

Kizer had six strikeouts and Gonzales recorded three strikouts while on the mound for the Tigers.

Douglas scored in five of the six innings in which the Tigers batted.

Erika Singland had nine strikeouts for the Hawks in a solid performance despite the loss.

Northern 4A Baseball

Douglas 11, Elko 5

Freshman Austin Graham pitched the distance and helped his own cause by hitting a pair of home runs to lead the Tigers past the Indians.

The Tigers (8-7, 9-7), who have won seven of their last eight games to climb into playoff contention, scored seven runs in the sixth inning to erase a 5-4 deficit.

Graham hit a solo home run in the second inning to go with a two-run blast in the Tigers' game-breaking sixth. Trevor Crawford hit a solo home run in the first inning and Kyle Wentz added a solo shot in the third to give Douglas an early 3-1 lead.

Richard French delivered a two-run double and Chris Murray tripled another run home in the Douglas sixth.

Meanwhile, Graham pitched a complete game eight-hitter to improve his record to 2-0. Graham struck out 10 and only walked one.

Douglas plays a doubleheader against conference-leading at Reno this morning at 10 a.m.

3A Division II Golf

RENO - Despite the absence of veteran standout Jim Kepler, Dayton High School managed to gain ground on the league golf tour on Friday afternoon.

Sophomore Justin Daw shot his lifetime best round of 79 to help Dayton finished third with a team total of 430 in the divisional match played at Rosewood Lakes.

Bishop Manogue won the match with a 410, four strokes better than Incline's 414, followed by Dayton and Whittell (443). The good news for the Dust Devils was beating Whittell for the first time this season to gain one point in the season-long race for two Division II berths for the 3A state tournament next month.

"We're only four points behind (second-place) Whittell and we have four tournaments left," Dayton coach Shannon Wines said. "Our goal is to be one of the top two teams so we can go to state. We'll see what happens."

Wines was especially pleased with the team's performance without Kepler, a junior who is sidelined indefinitely after suffering a broken foot on Thursday.

"I was very proud of the kids played without Jim there," Wines said. "We wondered how they would hold together but they all really stepped up and played a great round of golf."

Daw shot 3-over par over the back nine to finish with his 79, which was the third best individual score of the day. Incline's Jason Lanz earned medalist honors with a 76, while Whittell's Dustin Fox shot 77.

Cody Oden, Matt Watty and Jory Eley all shot 87 and Mike Janas 90 to round out Dayton's team scoring.

Yerington finished with a team total of 446, led by Brian Smith and Mike Lanzino 85. Travis Lemos also shot 87, Justin Mikkelson 92 and Barry Stone 97 for the Lions.

The next Division II match will be played next Thursday at Dayton Valley Country Club.

CARSON 18TH

SACRAMENTO - John Chirila carded a 76 and the Carson Senators shot 406 to come up 18th overall as a team during opening-round play at the Jesuit High School-hosted Joe Barry Junior Masters on Friday afternoon at Haggin Oaks.

Those scores weren't enough to rank highly against a blue chip field of teams from around Northern California. Elk Grove stood first with a 382 score coming into today's final round.

"We were playing on a good golf course that's pretty tough and against a very competitive field," Carson coach Paul Croghan said. "There's a lot of trees on this course, and when you get into those oak trees, you just have to suck it up and try to chip out."

Toby Steele also shot 80 and Nick Carlson finished strong for an 81. Carlson shot two-over par 37 on the back nine, capped off by birdies on the 17th and 18th holes.

Josh Bratzler shot 84, Steve Prim 85 and Justin Bryant 87 to round out Carson's team scores.
