Thousands of door hangers and plastic bags were spread Saturday throughout the Carson Valley by Cub and Boy Scouts hoping area residents will contribute to the annual Scouting for Food Drive.
When the scouts return next Saturday, they would like to collect nonperishable food items, paper goods, winter clothing items, dish and laundry soaps and other items that would brighten the holidays for needy families. The bags left Saturday are for the clothing donations.
The annual food drive this year marks the 75th anniversary of Boy Scouting in Nevada.
The Scouting for Food drive is a nationwide effort by Boy Scouts. This year, the Cub Scouts have joined in with their drive to collect the warm winter clothing.
The scouts are asking that the contributions be left at front doors by 9 a.m. Saturday. Nevada Highway patrol troopers will assist that day by setting up a scale at Lampe Park to weigh the donations.
All food collected will be donated to the Carson Valley Community Food Closet. The donated clothing will be distributed by the volunteers of Project Santa Claus, along with a variety of other articles, at the Douglas County Fairgrounds a few days before Christmas.
