Lyon County investigators Monday were trying to determine the origin of a human jaw bone found hanging in a bag on a fence in Weeks.

"Saturday, our officers were dispatched to a home of a park ranger who found a jaw bone in a Ziplock hanging on his fence," said Lyon County sheriff's investigator Rob Hall.

Hall said the bone appears to be old and the placement of it was not seen as a threat to the park ranger.

"Not a threat at all. What we think happened was someone didn't know what to do with it and they saw the park ranger's car with the lights on it and thought, "They'll know what to do with it," Hall said.

Hall said his office is hoping someone will come forward and tell them where the bone was found.

"We hope they will call us o we can make sure that a burial site hasn't been disturbed," he said. "Hopefully, they will see the stories and know it's they we are talking about and call."

Hall said there normally wouldn't be any charges if in fact the jaw bone came from a burial site.

"We think it came from somebody that wanted to to the right thing, but didn't want to get involved," he said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Lyon County Sheriff's Department and speak to Hall at (775) 577-5026.

Hall said an anthropologist has been called in to try to determine origin, race and age of the bone.

It is being preserved as evidence in case foul play is involved.
