Carson boys tennis routs Wooster

The Carson High boys tennis team would like to build as much momentum as possible in its effort to qualify as many players as it can for the state championships.

Carson began its drive by breaking through for its first win of the season, with a 16 1/2 to 6 win over Wooster on Thursday at Centennial Park.

Carson's best chance to have anyone make it to state figures to be in doubles with Josh Brekken and Andy Araza. But there's also the hope that Ash Dauenhauer and Karl Schulz can make a run at a state berth.

That would be a noteworthy accomplishment since only two Northern Nevada doubles teams will advance to state. But Carson coach Jeff Evans isn't counting his two teams out.

"I think we're going to have a better shot at doubles than in th singles bracket, but that's just speculation," said Evans about his players qualifying for state. "We will see."

Brekken and Araza won both of their matches 6-0, 6-0 on Thursday. An encouraging sign for Brekken and Araza came last week when they took Reno's No. 1 team, which figures to be Northern Nevada's No. 1 team, to a tiebreaker before losing.

"They're just getting better as they go," Evans said. "Hopefully they'll be peaking at the right time. Reno's probably going to have the top doubles team."

Dauenhauer and Schulz won all three of their matches 6-2, 6-4, 6-0 on Thursday.

"Who knows, we maybe can sneak Dauenhauer and Schulz in there, too," Evans said. "They're impressing me also."

The main goal for Carson is to at least finish in the top three in its league so the Senators can send their entire team to the zone playoffs.

Also in doubles on Thursday, John McDonald and Baron Brooks won both of their matches for Carson, winning 6-0 and overcoming a 3-5 deficit to win 7-6 (7-3). In singles, Tim Suchsland and Adam Henningsen each won won two matches and Zach Caron won 6-4.
