Ross McMahan has the talent as a swimmer, cyclist and runner to compete on a national level as an triathlete. On Saturday, the Incline Village man only had to worry about running and wound up cruising to victory in the 10-K race at the fourth annual Jester's Jog in Carson City.
McMahan, 32, of Incline Village, ran 38 minutes, 48 seconds on a 6.2-mile course that started and finished at the Pinon Plaza to finish as the overall winner at the Jester's Jog for the second year in a row.
A total of 109 runners and walkers participated in an event held to benefit the Northern Nevada Children's Museum. Race director Tim Tetz extended his thanks to the participants.
"It was great to have everyone out there and it was great to have a day where the snow wasn't blowing sideways," Tetz said, referring to blizzard conditions at the Jester's Jog last year. "The race earned a heck of a lot of money for the Children's Museum, and everyone seemed to have a good time. When all those things come together, it's a win-win situation."
McMahan, who runs for Fleet Feet Sports, is no stranger to the Carson City running community since he won the Jester's Jog and finished second at the Nevada Day Classic 8-K in 2001. He led wire-to-wire on Saturday.
"He's a really good triathlete; just a great athlete, period," Tetz said of McMahan. "He can get out there and scorch it."
Fleet Feet runners swept the top four places in the 10-K overall. Erick Studenicka of Reno was second in 40:56, followed by John Pang of Tahoe City in 41:54 and Dennis Pederson of Carson City in 42:15. Pang was the first masters (40-year-old) finisher and Pederson was first in the 50-59 age category.
Darlene Ford, 37, of Stateline, was the first woman and 10th overall finisher as she ran 44:55. Ford showed no ill effects from an ankle injury that slowed her training in February -- she is preparing to run a marathon later this year -- as she passed the first mile in 6:49 to lead the field of women from the start.
Jackie Taylor of Stateline ran 45:32 to finish as the second overall woman and first in the 40-49 age division. Taylor was the first woman at the Jog last year, two weeks before she ran the Boston Marathon.
Ryan Sruse finished 25th overall and first in the 10-and-under division with a time of 56:37.
Richard Shroy, 10, was the overall winner in the two-mile run with a time of 13:30. Shroy was a qualifier for the Junior Olympic national cross country championships last fall in Lincoln, Neb.
Calvin Dutton was second overall in the two-mile at 13:57. Staci Baker ran 15:30 to finish as the first woman and fifth overall. Sara Mangiarcina was eighth overall and first in the girls 10-and-under division with a time of 15:34.
