Musical weekend on tap

A very musical weekend is on tap for the Carson Valley, starting Saturday with an all-day event at the Sierra Starlight Amphitheatre in Genoa. One ticket covers both the afternoon show starting at 3 p.m. and the evening event kicking off at 7 p.m.

Happily, the minor problems of last Saturday's event with neighbors has been settled, says Doug Reynolds of the Upstage Theater, sponsors of Starlight.

The afternoon show offers classic rock tributes by the Unauthorized Rolling Stones, Cool Black Kettle and Raised on Radio. Evening show of soft rock features Ambrosia, Al Stewart and Gary Wright. Together these performances offer an ongoing music festival where guests can come and go as they please.

Food and beverage vendors are on hand to stoke the inner fires. Gates open at 1 p.m. with tickets $38, $33 and $28 at 882-8900 or sierrastarlight. net or at the gates. Sounds like a rockin' good time.

More Great Music at BAC

On Sunday the Brewery Arts Center continues its Jazz at the Brewery series at 7:30 p.m. with pioneer the jazz/rock guitarist Larry Coryell Trio, including Paul Wertico and Mark Egan. Coryell has played with some of the brightest lights in jazz such as Chico Hamilton and recorded "Memphis Underground" with Herbie Mann.

Make no mistake, Coryell is a master of the art. He's done gigs with Chick Corea, who has moved around the jazz universe from hard-edged stuff to tamer, more mellow music. He's played with -- hold on -- guitarists Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, drummer Elvin Jones, tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins, trumpeters Don Cherry, Maynard Ferguson, French violinist Stephane Grappelli and bassist Charles Mingus.

In his 60 recordings Coryell has played just about every evolving jazz form as well as his versions of classics by Igor Stravinsky and Maurice Ravel.

The concert will take place in the Brewery's Performance Hall, the former St. Teresa Church nave, which offers superb acoustics. Beverages are available before and at intermission in the basement.

This could easily be the concert of the year at BAC not to be missed.

Nugget Update

The Carson Nugget is offering Madison Avenue in the Show Lounge for musical fun through Sunday. This is a fun group with beauty as well as beasts involved. The group really works at getting the music right and are worth checking out a full set or two. Call 882-1626.

At Carson Station

Stew Stewart has been around the barn a few times and knows how to keep everyone happy. He'll be at the Station through Sunday at 7 p.m. Thursday and 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and again at 7 p.m. Stew's a laid back type with a fine sense of humor and a vast portfolio of music. Thoroughly enjoyable!

On Tuesday James "Jimmie" Campararo offers a tribute to John Lennon through next Sunday. He leads the band Image in the tribute to the late Beatle.

BIG HORSES

If you've had enough music the world famous Budweiser Clydesdales will be spending a few days at the Douglas County fairgrounds from Monday through Aug. 19. The familiar team of eight will be helping to open the new Wal-Mart Wednesday pulling the colorful red, white and gold beer wagon.
