120 YEARS AGO

It was daylight yesterday when the game at Avery's Saloon closed. The boys had been battling with the beast all night. Faro games in Carson are not generally played with large sums of money, but 25-cent chips became $5, and the evening ended with heavy betting. The professionals were cleaned out of nearly $1,000. Yesterday, the animal had a paw bandaged in a sling and one eye bandaged, but it was ready for business last night.

100 YEARS AGO

When Clarence King of the U.S. Geological Survey was on the Comstock, he said if he could live a million years, he would spend most in the vicinity of Steamboat Springs in Washoe County, where he claims that some of the secrets of the natural laboratory are exposed -- notable in the formation of cinnabar.

70 YEARS AGO

State Engineer George W. Malone will address the meeting of the Leisure Hour Club on the Boulder Dam and the process of constructing this great engineering project.

50 YEARS AGO

Washoe Typographical Union is 89 years old and held a banquet at Carson Hot Springs with President Tom Carter and Ben Smith in charge. Greetings were extended by Jack McCarthy and 56-year member Joe Farnsworth. It was founded in Virginia City in 1863, and includes Ormsby (Carson City), Storey, Douglas and Lyon.

20 YEARS AGO

Kingsbury Grade is closed for the Carson City International Pro Rally. There are 64 rally entrants, half expected to reach the grade.

10 YEARS AGO

Births -- St. Mary's Regional Medical Center, to Jill and Kay Berntson of Dayton, son, Houston James, Nov. 23.
