Bastian breaks school record for 3-pointers

RENO -- Nobody was really surprised when Nevada senior Ashley Bastian became the school's career record holder for most 3-pointers on Saturday.

"That's what I've been ever since I came here was a 3-point shooter," Bastian said. "I didn't really (think about the record during the game). After those first couple, I was kind of feeling it."

Bastian came into Saturday's game with 145 career 3-pointers and needed five treys to beat Angie Heer's career record of 150. The 5-foot-8 senior from Porterville, Calif., ended up with seven 3-pointers in the Wolf Pack's 80-70 win over the University of San Diego at Lawlor Events Center and now has 152. Her 3-pointer with 9:20 left in the game was the record breaker and it also put the Wolf Pack up 60-45 after San Diego had cut their lead to 10 points.

Heer's record only stood for two years as she broke it during the 2000-2001 season, which means the top two 3-point shooters in Nevada history still hang out.

"Me and Angie are real close, I'm always over at her house," Bastian said. "It's nice to actually beat her."

Bastian finished with 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field and was 7-of-11 from behind the arc. It was the second time that Bastian made seven threes in a game this season, which also ties Heer's school single game record.

"Ashley is a great 3-point shooter," coach Ada Gee said. "That's one of the reasons why we recruited her. She's just having a great senior year."

PADGETT-SMITH MATCH UP

San Diego junior Melissa Padgett, a 2000 Reno High graduate, and her highly anticipated meeting with Nevada senior Kate Smith, a 1999 McQueen graduate, didn't amount to much.

Statistically Padgett had the better game, finishing with 11 points, five assists and seven rebounds. Smith scored 11 points but turned the ball over a season-high 10 times. Still, the former Lancer got the best of Padgett, like she did during the two's high school playing days in Reno.

Smith led McQueen to four consecutive 4A state championships during her prep career and ended Padgett's junior season in the state tournament. Both players were named Nevada State Player of the Year during their respective senior seasons.

"I think sometimes too much is made about those types of match ups," Gee said.

ROAD WARRIORS

San Diego lost on the road for the second straight game after enjoying some success on the road. The Toreros (5-4) had won their first three away games this season but has now dropped back-to-back games to Cal-State Fullerton and Nevada.

STREAKS AND STUFF

Saturday's 10-point win over San Diego brought Nevada's current win streak to five games. It's the fourth longest stretch since Ada Gee took over the program in 1993. Gee's longest winning streak is nine games, which was set during the 1999-00 season. She also had a seven-game win streak and a six-game streak both in the same season (1997-98).

INGHAM MAKING STRIDES

Nevada point guard Laura Ingham recorded her third consecutive double-double this season as she finished with a career-high 28 points and a season high 12 assists against San Diego. Ingham had 19 points and 11 assists in a 73-64 win over New Mexico State on Wednesday and 12 points and 10 assists in a 72-55 win over Saint Mary's College last Sunday.
