Looking for a Nevada-style road trip?

How about three hot August days touring Hawthorne to Goldfield to Belmont and back with all the historic sites in between.

The Nevada Women's History Project is hosting its fourth annual Silver State Sampler, this year a three-day tour to Goldfield to help celebrate the mining camp's 100th anniversary.

In this year's Aug. 23-25 sampling of Nevada, the group -- via an air-conditioned bus -- will tour Hawthorne, Tonopah, Goldfield, Belmont, Manhattan and Round Mountain before heading home.

Cherry Jones, trip co-chairwoman, said the trip will be "a wonderful experience to explore Nevada history."

"We think it's really important that people who live in Nevada see Nevada," Jones said.

The group will be taking many of their "historic women"-- from Hannah Clapp to Bird Wilson -- on tour with them to participate in Goldfield's birthday parade, said Isabel Espinoza, also a co-chairwoman.

There is room on the bus for anyone interested in attending the tour who signs up for the trip by July 23. The $275 fee covers travel, lodging, several meals and a donation to the women's history project.

That fee and any money earned from a book sale will go into the history project's Sara Winnemucca fund. The group is helping raise $150,000 to place a statute of the legendary 19th century Indian activist in Washington, D.C.'s National Statuary Hall.

Goldfield's centennial celebration includes live music and dancing, a parade, land auction, bed races, gold panning and a bike race as well as historical tours, a swap meet and an indoor children's carnival. Goldfield is 25 miles south of Tonopah on Highway 95.
